  • Overview

    This Category Manager – Deli is responsible for the development and implementation of category business plans within assigned categories that align with department and company strategies. The Category Manager plans and directs all aspects of product development programs, pricing, and promotions, in line with overall department business objectives and initiatives, with oversight from the department director and vice president. The Category Manager analyzes past buying trends, sales records, price, and quality of merchandise to determine value and develop programs and initiatives to meet targeted expectations. This position is also responsible for the achievement of sales objectives, profitability goals, market share and competitive position strategies.

    Essential Functions

    • Analyze product profitability, selection, display and assortment using category management practices.
    • Budgets and monitors sales and margin plans of assigned categories in accordance with personal and company goals.
    • Review all weekly, monthly, and quarterly statements.
    • Provide the stores with relevant data to make informed decisions about the department and how to maximize profitability.
    • Coordination and supervision of all retail pricing for each price and promotional region.
    • Oversees competitive analysis, including auditing competitive product selection, displays and pricing through on-site visits and market research.
    • Develops strategies with key business partners on product innovation and improvement; presentation, packing, pricing, assortment and shrink.
    • Presents information (i.e., category budget overviews, accounting processes etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback, and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
    • Coordinates information relative to the development of supplier and product profiles.
    • Organizes and participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information to perform functions.
    • Develops long and short range category plans for the purpose of expanding the department programs and/or ensuring that company resources are effectively utilized.
    • Coordinates key local initiatives by region including the definition of core commodities, supporting pricing and promotional programs, and development of POS materials and grower profiles.
    • Support department resets, remodels, and new store openings as appropriate.
    • Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships.
    • Support and act as a liaison between Sprouts stores and vendors to assure quality products and department standards are being are being delivered.
    • Ensure that all federal, state, and company regulations and standards for product freshness, safety, refrigeration, and sanitation are met.
    • Maintain awareness of Sprouts marketing strategies and competitive activity.
    • Coordinate and source vendor participation for new store openings and resets.
    • Develop strategies that keep Sprouts on the cutting edge of the industry.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements

    • Bachelor Degree with a minimum of 10 years of industry and supervisory experience in developing and monitoring quality specifications, performing price comps and other related experience.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal capacities across a broad range of audiences: senior level executives, department team, department directors, vendors, directors of departmental operations, store leadership and team members.
    • Complete understanding of P/L statements, general ledgers, and margins.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and possess a general ability to adapt to new software.
    • Must be able to develop, manipulate, format and share spreadsheets for purpose of analysis.
    • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the job functions include: accounting/bookkeeping, interpretation of profit & loss reporting, planning and managing projects, preparing and maintaining accurate records and using pertinent software applications.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form and work with strict time frames and resolute deadlines.
