  • Overview

    The Tax Director is responsible for all Sprouts Farmers Market tax affairs, including tax strategy, planning, provisions, and compliance/audit governance. This position is responsible for developing and administering formal tax management policies and strategies and ensures thorough and consistent communication and compliance within a diverse set of constituencies interfacing with the Tax Department.

    Essential Functions

    Tax Planning

    • Directing the tax planning initiatives of the company to minimize its overall tax burden and efficiently utilize internal and external tax resources
    • Proactively investigate any opportunities for federal, state and local tax incentives to reduce effective tax rates and cash taxes
    • Maintain quarterly estimated tax rate schedule in coordination with FP&A and Treasury
    • Monitor lease accounting standard provision impacts
    • Support the company’s efforts in major new business initiatives or transactions
    • Establish and implement a process that facilitates the identification and management of tax risk
    • Establish and coordinate required analytical, research and implementation efforts to fully realize the company’s tax strategies, including appropriate involvement of Finance, Legal, and other internal constituents and external consultants, advisors or providers.


    Income Tax/SEC Compliance

    • Planning and coordinating the preparation and review of the income tax provision of the Company and its affiliates and effectively interpreting and communicating the results of such work to senior management and from time to time, the Audit Committee, as required.
    • Responding timely and effectively to all inquiries concerning income tax accounting matters made by the SEC, PCAOB or other regulatory bodies
    • Coordinate with external audit for the efficient review of quarterly and annual tax accounting and returns
    • Ensure accurate and timely filing/remittance of all tax returns, extensions and estimated payments.
    • Adequately maintaining and improving internal controls in the area of income taxes and coordinating related activities, testing, etc. with the VP of Internal Audit
    • Manage tax examinations initiated by various jurisdictions.
    • Investigate and resolve tax notices received.


    Indirect Tax Compliance

    • Oversee the preparation and review of various non-income based tax return filings, including: sales and use tax, gross receipts-based taxes, franchise taxes, certain filings fees, personal property tax, commercial rent tax, and other miscellaneous taxes.
    • Develop and maintain a matrix of all tax filings.


    Additional Responsibilities

    • Remain current on new tax legislation and tax accounting rules. Identify, assess and document the tax implications of any such changes. 
    • Act as the primary tax resource within the Company. Support Investor Relations with any tax-related investor inquiries. 
    • Assist with the annual budget and ongoing forecasting processes by computing budgeted and forecasted tax rates and other tax-related accounts and expenses. 
    • Manage cash taxes and produce reliable cash tax forecasts. Identify and implement improvements to the tax compliance and tax provision process, policies and procedures. 
    • Manages departmental resources to provide the corporation with a cost effective, efficient coordination of internal staffing and external providers. 
    • Prepare reports/analyses and participate in other projects as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements

    Skills & Knowledge

    • BS/BA in Accounting required.
    • Master’s degree in Tax required.
    • CPA required.
    • Detailed knowledge of corporate taxation.



    • Minimum 10+ years of relevant tax experience (including a combination of public accounting and corporate tax experience); post public accounting experience as Tax Director preferred
    • Experience in grocery, restaurant and/or retail industries a plus.
    • Must have excellent communication, analytical and decision-making skills, as well as mentoring skills, self-starter and team player
    • Exhibit credibility when representing the Company in tax matters, present a positive, persuasive and professional presence, and ability to investigate and research matters in the best interest of the Company.
    • Solid working knowledge of income tax accounting rules including new regulatory developments from the FASB and SEC tax matters associated with a U.S. Retailer including transactional tax planning matters
